Well.. this is Big. The OS giant Microsoft has joined hands with Yahoo to beat Google in it’s own game. Google has been a phenomenal headache for the then Yahoo search and now Microsoft also. But no fear now as Both the giants have announced a 10-year agreement to improve the Web search experience for users and advertisers.

Microsoft will acquire an exclusive 10-year license to Yahoo!’s core search technologies, and Microsoft will have the ability to integrate Yahoo! search technologies into its existing Web search platforms. In simple terms, Microsoft will now power Yahoo! search while Yahoo! will become the exclusive worldwide relationship sales force for both companies’ search advertisers.

Microsoft’s Bing will be the exclusive algorithmic search and paid search platform for Yahoo! sites. Yahoo! will continue to use its technology and data in other areas of its business such as enhancing display advertising technology. Self-serve advertising for both companies will be fulfilled by Microsoft’s AdCenter platform, and prices for all search ads will continue to be set by AdCenter’s automated auction process.

Each company will maintain its own separate display advertising business and sales force. Under the agreement, Yahoo! will innovate and ‘own’ the user experience on Yahoo! properties, including the user experience for search, even though it will be powered by Microsoft technology. Microsoft will compensate Yahoo! through a revenue sharing agreement on traffic generated on Yahoo!’s network of both owned and operated (O&O) and affiliate sites. Yahoo! will continue to syndicate its existing search affiliate partnerships.

Microsoft will pay traffic acquisition costs (TAC) to Yahoo! at an initial rate of 88 per cent of search revenue generated on Yahoo!’s O&O sites during the first five years of the agreement. Microsoft will guarantee Yahoo!’s O&O revenue per search (RPS) in each country for the first 18 months following initial implementation in that country.

The agreement does not cover each company’s Web properties and products, e-mail, instant messaging, display advertising, or any other aspect of the companies’ businesses. In those areas, the companies will continue to compete vigorously.

At full implementation (expected to occur within 24 months following regulatory approval), Yahoo! estimates, based on current levels of revenue and current operating expenses, that this agreement will provide a benefit to annual GAAP operating income of approximately $500 million and capital expenditure savings of approximately $200 million. Yahoo! also estimates that this agreement will provide a benefit to annual operating cash flow of approximately $275 million.

The transaction will be subject to regulatory review. The companies expect the deal to close in early 2010.

Guys ..We know that it is late for India to look into this serious matter of Software Piracy, but as the saying goes “Better late than never” ,India is taking some steps to control this menace .The rate of personal computer (PC) software piracy dropped in 2008 in about half (57) of the 110 countries studied, remained the same in about a third (36) and rose in just 16, according to the BSA-IDC Piracy Study conducted in 2008. However, the worldwide PC software piracy rate rose for the second year in a row, from 38 per cent to 41 per cent, largely because PC shipments grew fastest in countries such as China and India.

The Government of India has taken following steps to control software piracy. In India, the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) of software is covered under Copyright Law, violation of which attracts both fine and imprisonment on a mandatory basis.
According to the Government, a police officer of the rank of sub-inspector is empowered to seize infringing copies, duplicating and other equipments used for making infringing copies, without a warrant. The ‘Copyright Act’ also prohibits the sale or to give on hire, or offer for sale or hire, any copy of the computer programme without specific authorisation of the Copyright holder.

The Government has also set up a Copyright Enforcement Advisory Council (under MHRD) — the nodal administrative ministry which reviews the progress of enforcement of the Copyright Act and also advises on measures, both on the policy front as well as on the implementation front for its better enforcement. Special cells for monitoring the enforcement of copyright have been set at police headquarters in the states/UTs. Computer software is exempted from customs duty.

The Centre has also instructed various government departments to only use legal copies of software. Ministry of human resource development and department of information technology, Government of India, as well as NASSCOM, will sponsor ‘Software Management Seminars’ to enhance awareness.

“The market competition has also been instrumental in reducing the costs, thus making the products affordable and hence bringing down the piracy. The introduction of software services is another step towards countering piracy,” notes Sachin Pilot, minister of state, ministry of communications and information technology, Government of India.

Well Guys ..The steps have been taken, but it is still duty on our part as well to stop piracy at the individual level at least.

Micheal Jackson’s death has come as a shocker to all his fans the world over. He died in New York due to a cardiac arrest on thusday at the age of 50. The news was so shocking for the fans that the internet could also not bear the sudden swarming of fans on various news sites and social networking sites and the traffic got heated up causing a slow down and constant crashing.

It turns out many of the Internet’s top news sites fared better at handling the glut of traffic following the death of singer Michael Jackson than previously thought.

Keynote Systems, a company that tracks site performance, said Friday that it erred in measuring performance for news sites and issued incorrect information Thursday evening.

Dan Berkowitz, Keynote’s spokesman, said the most important thing was to correct the record about ABCNews.com, which he said delivered pages to visitors close to normally during the hour-long traffic spike following Jackson’s death. He added that the company is still studying the causes of the error. A representative for Disney, which owns ABC, said the company saw “no dips in performance” as a result of the traffic glut.

While Keynote’s assessment of site performance may have been overly bleak, many news sites were slow to deliver pages and in some cases were inaccessible at times.

When news of the iconic performer’s death began trickling out, scores of people turned to the Web for information. TMZ broke the news that Jackson, 50, known for producing some of the world’s best selling records, including “Thriller” and “Bad,” had died Thursday afternoon, but the gossip hub cited only unnamed sources and offered few details. As other news services turned their attention to the story and as the public took to the Web to learn more about the performer’s condition, some Web sites began slowing down.

Some Google users complained that the search engine’s News area was inaccessible for a time.

A Google representative confirmed that “between approximately 2:40 p.m. PDT and 3:15 p.m. PDT today, some Google News users experienced difficulty accessing search results for queries related to Michael Jackson.”

CNN.com appeared to be sluggish delivering Jackson stories at times. In its defense, the news organization said that the site saw 20 million page views and a fivefold increase in traffic (from where it was prior to when news about Jackson’s death began widely circulating) in one hour.

Even before Jackson’s death, Thursday was a big day for news sites as word of actress Farrah Fawcett’s death hit the wires in the morning and continued interest in the scandal surrounding South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford.

The traffic deluge came swiftly and lasted for about a half hour, according to internal data here at CNET News, which saw twice the normal amount of hourly traffic shortly after word of Jackson’s death spread. At sister site CBSNews.com, traffic numbers were five times their normal levels.

On Friday, antivirus vendor Sophos reported on a wave of spam related to Jackson’s death that claims to have vital information about the news event. There are no malicious URLs in the spam, but recipients who reply to the message are then providing proof that the e-mail address is legitimate and will likely be targeted in future spam campaigns, the company said.

Well, we are having lots of social networking sites like Orkut, Facebook and others as well. But another mode of social networking will hit you this season-A Blue GPS ( a GPS and bluetooth enabled shoe). Talk of being practically socialistic!!

Isaac Daniel, whose Global Positioning System (GPS) sneakers gained worldwide attention in 2007, has announced the company’s newest GPS shoe, Blue GPS. The new version of the GPS shoe is being billed as a social networking shoe. Called Blue GPS because of their Bluetooth capability, the new shoes enable the wearer to be tracked by friends and family through their cell phones. The wearer simply inputs up to five phone numbers of family/friends into his cell phone (eventually this capability will be able to be expanded to up to 20 people) and pushes a button on the shoe to activate a link with those on his list. The Blue GPS can be enabled with all cellular phones.

“This is an important step in the progression of our company and product line,” said Isaac Daniel, chairman, IDG (Isaac Daniel Group). “This is an affordable price point for consumers and a fun product to have. People will be able to see where their friends are — and have a better idea of estimated arrival time — without having to call them. And, because the wearer doesn’t have to be talking on the phone while driving, it will definitely improve safety.”

Daniel, on a recent business trip to Europe, tested the phone with various friends and business associates in the United States, Europe and Africa.

“I inputted several names worldwide and activated the link,” he said. “They were able to track me via their cell phones and even on Facebook. That’s why we refer to the Blue GPS as social networking with your feet.”

In addition to the button linking the shoe and cell phone users, another button can be pressed for an ‘E911′ call. When that button is pushed, a signal is sent to IDG’s monitoring division, ID Conex, which then attempts to contact the wearer. If the shoe wearer does not respond, ID Conex then alerts the proper authorities.

Daniel also emphasised that the original GPS shoes — using IDG’s patented Quantum Satellite Technology — are currently being field tested for future military and healthcare industry usage.

Blue GPS is expected to retail for about $150 when it hits stores in Latin America this fall.

Now that is some Extra Ordinary Extra intelligent footwear one can buy!!

Hi Guys!!…I am writing after a long break. But this news will definately take you all by storm! Google is planning to do something that will change the way people communicate. Wave is the name of the new project that is being planned by Google.

Wave is a very bold way to re-write the manner in which people communicate and interact online. It is nothing conventional you can think of. Google merges your e-mails, IMs, Twits, Facebook and a lot of other such services and offers them under one roof called Wave.

You can understand Wave as a content that you have created. Let’s assume this news item. Now, you can share this news with people, and your friends may keep adding content to it. They may write some more, add some pics, comment through twits and much more. According to Google Blog, “A ‘wave’ is equal parts conversation and document, where people can communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps and more.”

Here’s how it works:

In Google Wave, you create a Wave and add people to it. Everyone on your Wave can use formatted text, photos, gadgets and even feeds from other sources on the Web. They can insert a reply or edit the wave directly. It’s concurrent rich-text editing, where you see on your screen nearly instantly what your fellow collaborators are typing in your Wave. That means Google Wave is just as well suited for quick messages as for persistent content — it allows for both collaboration and communication. You can also use ‘playback’ to rewind the wave and see how it evolved.

The Google Wave protocol is the underlying format for storing and the means of sharing waves, and includes the ‘live’ concurrency control, which allows edits to be reflected instantly across users and services. The protocol is designed for open federation, such that anyone’s Wave services can interoperate with each other and with the Google Wave service. To encourage adoption of the protocol, Google says it intends to open source the code behind Google Wave.

Google has not yet decided the specific time frame for public release, but plans to continue working on Google Wave for a number of months more as a developer preview.

Now this news is shocking for all the Pirate Bay lovers who like to download all their favorite torrents from this site. The news is that the four Swedish founders of Pirate Bay were sentenced to jail for helping consumers illegally download online music and films, handing the entertainment industry a victory in the battle to protect copyrighted material.

Fredrik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, Peter Sunde Kolmisoppi and Carl Lundstroem were given jail sentences of one year each by a Stockholm district court yesterday. The court ordered the defendants to pay compensation and damages of 30 million kronor ($3.6 million), below the more than 100 million kronor claimed by prosecutors. The defendants said they plan to appeal.

The ruling is the industry’s biggest triumph since successful lawsuits against music-swapping sites Napster Inc., Kazaa and Grokster Ltd. The International Federation of Phonographic Industry(IFPI) estimates 95 percent of all downloaded music is pirated, as consumers can get access to files free of charge within minutes, often before commercial release dates.

Pirate Bay is the largest file-sharing site using BitTorrent software, which allows users to download and share files in 34 languages for free, according to IFPI. Pirate Bay has said the site is a network where users put up content to share with other users and that there is no copyrighted material on the site. Pirate Bay had 22 million simultaneous users in February.

Content owners have successfully sued to stop file-sharing services such as Napster and Grokster from allowing consumers to download copyrighted material without permission. Napster began in 1999 as a free music-swapping Web site. Roxio Inc. purchased the company out of bankruptcy to start a paid download service and adopted its name in 2004.

Yes, This indeed is a lesson for not only the people who create such sites but also who download the copyrighted materials for free.

DELHiTECHiES strongly condemn illegal downloads!

Hey Guys… Exams are over our heads now!! What to do? We haven’t even touched the books… Leave books not even syllabus..!!

Don’t worry,we will pass the exams for sure…(By Hook or Crook.. ).

I was reading a article in the Times of India dated 11th April, about the ways and means the students (of course the Duffers!) go about cheating without being noticed . And they get through with flying colors.

I thought of sharing them with you all.. So here are the Kinds of Cheaters (Duffers, please read these carefully )

Kind 1: Book Worms– Don’t get me wrong.. They are different kind of bookworms !!…They wont read at home ,bus or train..instead they would start reading between the “Three Hours” paper.. roaming around in the corridor or in the bathroom where they store their miniaturized books..

Kind 2 :Chit Makers–These are the kinds who will not read the books all nights, but copy them neatly into small pieces of papers to copy next morning in the exams … Even CIA cannot decipher the codes … They would place them..below the collar,in the tie,in socks,in shoes….and the list goes on..If a cheater would get caught we can collect enough written material that will be more than he has written in the paper!!!

Kind 3-Sheet Changers– These are the most lazy ones… they dont even try the above two formulas …they want the “paki pakai kichdi”(cooked hotchpotch ).As soon as the inviligator turns around, without wasing a microsecond they change their sheets…And voila ..PASS!!

Kind 4: Tattoo Makers–These are the creative kinds..They would write all the formulas and definitions on their handkerchiefs,on hands,legs..Even jeans…WoW…

So what’s your Pick?

A Taiwanese Company Elan Microelectronics has sued Apple, alleging infringement of two of its touch screen patents.

The suit was filed on 7th April in U.S. District Court in San Francisco,

“We couldn’t find a common viewpoint with Apple, so we decided we had to take action,” Dennis Liu, an Elan spokesman, said adding that the companies had been in licensing talks for about two years.

Apple is based in Cupertino, California.

The lawsuit alleges that Apple products — including its MacBook computer, iPhone and iPod Touch — use technology that infringes on two of Elan’s patents, Elan said.

It was not immediately clear what penalties or remedial action Elan was seeking in the suit.

In January, Apple reported fourth quarter earnings that were stronger than expected in part because of robust sales for the iPhone, MacBook and iPod.

Touch screen technology allows users to zoom in and out, flip images around and perform other tasks using two or more fingers pressed to the screen.

Touch screens are increasingly popular in a wide array of electronic devices and appliances. The market consulting company iSuppli last year forecast that the worldwide market for all touch screen modules would nearly double, from $3.4 billion in 2008 to $6.4 billion by 2013.

Elan said it won a preliminary court injunction against a U.S.-based rival, Synaptics, in a dispute over one of the patents mentioned in the Apple lawsuit, after a suit was filed in 2006 by a unit that was a subsidiary at the time. Synaptics countersued.

Both actions were dismissed last year after the two companies reached a cross-licensing agreement, according to a statement on Elan’s Web site.

Now Google goes musical!! Have a look at this
Google and the Big Four music labels have launched an ad-supported music service in China in an attempt to make online music profitable there. The venture, launched along with 14 independent labels, will have to compete with search engines that point users to thousands of copyrighted music files for free, but Google hopes that this will make it even easier for users to find what they want online while ensuring artists get paid for their work.

This appears to be the same venture that Google discussed in August of 2008, now located at http://www.google.cn/music. The service is actually run through the partially-Google-owned Top100.cn, which is responsible for selling advertising space and divvying up revenues between the music labels. The site will be limited by IP address to those in mainland China, however, so if you’re in Taiwan or any other surrounding area and want to get a taste, you’ll be out of luck.

“This is the first really serious attempt to start monetizing online music in China,” Warner Music Asia president Lachie Rutherford told the Associated Press. Google China president Kai-Fu Lee agreed, adding that today’s launch “complete[s] the puzzle” by offering a fully-integrated set of music and advertising services.

Google’s music search is, of course, a direct response to the popular Chinese search engine Baidu, which has made a name for itself by providing deep links to seemingly unlimited quantities of illegal music. In fact, Baidu has recently come under fire for its MP3 deep-linking policies, as the Music Copyright Society of China and the IFPI have both filed lawsuits against the search engine for the practice.

The ad-supported music venture is the latest in a long string of efforts by Big Content to compete with piracy in China. In November of 2008, Warner Bros. announced that it planned to offer certain films as downloadable rentals in China for a fraction of the cost in other parts of the world (4 to 7 yuan, or roughly 58¢ to $1.02). Before that, Warner China (a joint effort between Warner Bros., China Film Group, and Hengdian Group) announced that it would start selling certain movies just days after their theatrical releases for as low as 10 yuan. Warner Bros. also joined up with Paramount to start selling legit DVDs in China for about 20 to 25 yuan, or just under $3.

One catch to Google’s music service is that it will cooperate with Chinese law and block songs that have been banned by the government. This isn’t exactly a surprising move, however—companies must agree to China’s rules in order to do business there, or they can go home. “When you’re in the music business in China you know you have to follow the regulations,” Rutherford said.

The Big four comprises (along with market share (2005) ) of :

Universal Music Group (France based) — 31.71%

Sony BMG Music Entertainment (Japan/Germany based) — 25.61% (13.83% Sony, 11.78% BMG)

Warner Music Group (USA based) — 15%

EMI Group (UK based) — 9.55%

“Google can buy Twitter”! This speculation is going around on the Blogsphere.

Two prominent technology news blogs clashed on Friday morning over a report one of them issued that said Google Inc may try to buy Internet start-up Twitter.

according to three unnamed sources, Google would pay for Twitter in cash, stock or a combination of the two.

The companies are also considering working together on a Google real-time search engine.

Another blog said the story was inaccurate, citing “a number of sources.”

“In fact, Twitter and Google have simply been engaged in ‘some product-related discussions,’ according to one source,” the blog said.

Twitter is a service that allows people to send short text messages to a network of friends. Its popularity is growing, particularly among journalists looking for new ways to get people to read their news and commentary.

The San Francisco, California-based company has yet to make any money. That has not stopped the technology world from speculating on who will scoop up the company, though co-founder Biz Stone told Reuters in March that it is not considering a merger or a buyout.

Lets see what happens

Having a good time with your Smart Phone ? Some trouble is yet to come!!

Playing games to surfing the internet on the Smart Phones is common now and the advertisers are finding ways and means to target your smart phones also. As the technology advances with GPRS ,GPS 3G and 4 G on their way to your phone advertisements do not seem to leave your lives soon!

The millions of people who use their cellphones daily to play games, download applications and browse the internet may not realise that they havean unseen companion: advertisers that can track their interests, their habits and even their location.

Smartphones, like the iPhone and BlackBerry Curve, are the latest and potentially most extensive way for advertisers to aim ads at certain consumers. Advertisers already tailor ads for small groups of consumers on the web based on personal information. But cellphones have a much higher potential for personalised advertising, especially when they use applications like Yelp or Urbanspoon with GPS to identify a person’s location, right down to the street corner where they are standing.
Advertisers will pay high rates for the ability to show, for example, ads for a nearby restaurant to someone leaving a Broadway show, especially when coupled with information about the gender, age, finances and interests of the consumer.

Eswar Priyadarshan, the chief technology officer of Quattro Wireless, which places advertising for clients like Sony on mobile sites, says he typically has 20 pieces of information about a customer who has visited a site or played with an application in his network. “The basic idea is, you go through all these channels, and you get as much data as possible,” he said.
The capability for collecting information has alarmed privacy advocates.

“It’s potentially a portable, personal spy,” said Jeff Chester, the executive director of the Center for Digital Democracy, who will appear before Federal Trade Commission staff members this month to brief them on privacy and mobile marketing. He is particularly concerned about data breaches, advertisers’ access to sensitive health or financial information, and a lack of transparency about how advertisers are collecting data. “Users are going to be inclined to say, sure, what’s harmful about a click, not realising that they’ve consented to give up their information.”

For now, advertisers are using a wide lens to survey people’s behaviour on phones, aiming at people by city rather than by specific neighbourhood or street.

And while they collect specifics about how someone behaves on the mobile website — for instance, that someone bought a “Hot N Cold” ring tone after seeing an ad for it, then watched a Miley Cyrus video on TMZ.com — they use that information to categorise that person as a pop-culture fan, and then show a movie ad.

Advertisers are eager to use the information for much more specific targeting, however. An advertising system could know, for instance, that someone is 27 years old, male, a New England Patriots fan (which NFL.com can track), plays Blackjack, travels frequently between Boston and New York on weekdays (which applications using GPS can track) and uses a 3G iPhone. That would make him attractive to a host of advertisers, like the Delta Shuttle or a Las Vegas hotel, whose ads would appear while the consumer was browsing on his phone.

“Everyone’s in an arms race to find out more and more about their users,” said Eric Bader, the managing partner of the mobile advertising firm Brand in Hand. Even application developers are handing over information about their customers to marketers. Dockers San Francisco, a brand of Levi Strauss, for instance, is beginning a campaign this week that will run on applications like iBasketball and iGolf. It will show a model wearing khakis, and the iPhone customer can shake the phone to see the model dance.

Dockers will start by tracking how long people shake the ad, and then “if it does make sense to do follow-up with these consumers, we’ll do that,” said Jonathan Haber, the United States director of Ignition Factory at OMD, the media agency directing the campaign. “We dig in, specifically, with these application developers and owners to get information about usage behaviour.”

It’s not just behaviour, but also data on income, or even whether you have children, that advertisers consider.

It’s seems that the Word “Green” is spreadig like wild fire in the IT sector.Every company wants to be a part of the Green brigade in order to play a small part in saving this planet.

IBM the computer giant recenty launched the Green Consultancy Service-to help government agencies analyze their environmental impact, boost energy efficiency and reduce global warming activities.
It is the first consulting service designed to help government organisations analyse energy and water use, assess waste management, evaluate overall environmental impact and develop improvement strategies. The IBM Public Sector Energy and Environment Diagnostic can help governments better understand their overall performance on environmental issues, identify improvements that can increase energy efficiency, reduce environmental impact including greenhouse gas emissions, and help ensure public institutions meet their own rising environmental standards.
IBM developed the diagnostic to help US federal agencies comply with current requirements for broad improvements in efficiency and economy for all environmental, energy and transportation management operations. However, it can be adapted to any future requirements for US government agencies or for use with any other federal, state or municipal government in any country.

“Citizens everywhere are demanding that governments improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact, and public officials at every level are responding by raising standards for how they operate,” said Eric Riddleberger, IBM’s business strategy consulting global leader, who heads up the company’s corporate social responsibility consulting efforts. “Using a comprehensive approach that employs new, smart processes and tools to assess current performance and develop improvements can help public agencies meet those standards while maintaining proper levels of public service.”

The IBM Public Sector Energy and Environment Diagnostic offering uses a proprietary Heat Map tool to provide an initial analysis. Based on IBM’s Component Business Model approach, the tool breaks organisations down into logical segments — finance, operations, procurement, etc. — and then provides an analysis as to how well they are performing in terms of efficiency, cost and environmental impact.

Areas for potential environmental improvement are colour coded — red for “most critical”, yellow for “moderately critical”, and green for “performing within guidelines” — to help government institutions prioritise where to make changes. From there, IBM can assist government agencies in developing a comprehensive strategy for prioritising and implementing those changes, accounting for the cost and benefit of each solution.

Specific areas addressed in the diagnostic are

environmental management systems

energy and greenhouse gases; water management

waste and disposal; facilities and equipment

workforce programmes

The Public Sector Energy and Environment Diagnostic joins a growing portfolio of consulting offerings from IBM designed to help clients address CSR issues throughout their operations, including: the CSR Assessment and Benchmarking Utility, the Carbon Tradeoff Modeller, Green Sigma, Environmental Product Lifecycle Management, the Supply Chain Network Optimisation Workbench (or SNOW) and Strategic Carbon Management.

The public sector diagnostic is designed to be used together with many of these other offerings. For example, after completing an analysis and identifying areas for improvement with the public sector diagnostic, clients can use Green Sigma, which applies Lean Six Sigma principles to measuring and monitoring energy and water usage throughout a organisation’s operations, and the Carbon Trade-off Modeller, which helps evaluate and balance carbon dioxide emissions and energy usage with other key factors throughout a supply chain — cost, service and quality.

These offerings use “smart” approaches, such as advanced business processes and monitoring dashboards, which allow clients to collect and analyse large amounts of data to make better decisions.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates has banned his family from using Apple’s iPhone and iPod gadgets.

In an interview to Vogue magazine, Melinda Gates has revealed that Bill has barred in three kids, Jennifer, 13, Rory, 10 and Phoebe, 7 from using any of the Apple products.

“There are very few things that are on the banned list in our household. But iPods and iPhones are two things we don’t get for our kids,” the Telegraph quoted her as saying.

However, Melinda herself is swayed by Apple’s iPhone device, which combines a touch-screen music player and web browser with a fully featured mobile phone.

“Every now and then I look at my friends and say ‘Ooh, I wouldn’t mind having that iPhone’,” she added.
