HCL: Hit after Hit after Hit!

The latest news coming from HCL is not of “off-shoring” its about building its base in India.

IT hardware firm HCL Infosystems has been awarded a Rs 529 crore ($114 million) IT project for Rajasthan’s power distribution utilities, a top official of the utilities said on Friday. “We have awarded the order to HCL Infosystems,” R.G. Gupta, chairman of Jaipur, Jodhpur and Ajmer Vidyut Vitaran Nigam Ltd, said from Jaipur. The project involves applying technology to identify power losses across all cities and villages of Rajasthan and has to be completed in 18 months, he said. A company spokesman declined to comment but said HCL Infosystems had bid for several R-APDRP (Re-structured Accelerated Power Development and Reform Programme) IT projects including the one in Rajasthan.

The project undertaken by HCL is quite similar to Google’s PowerMeter or Microsoft HOHM. However these projects are targeted at a population at large under the current US President Obama’s Green Initiative – The US Smart Electrical Grid is One of the fastest, Of all the expected green initiatives to reach the consumers. It comprises of a control unit in every home and business. This control unit will allow the consumers to monitor & track electrical power usage and notify consumers of times when electrical rates are at a peak. Consumers would have the option of reducing power usage for real-time savings, or set the controls to automatically shut-down unnecessary electrical devices during peak hours.

But in India, as we all know – even being the top off-shoring market for IT and ITES we still are far behind in actual realization of these technology benefits into our day-to-day life. But imagine a pyscho-hacker hacking into your electrical system and turning off all your appliances, esp. when you are watching your favorite T20 matches – and believe me you would be so pissed off; anyways its better one way or the other not to have that level of technology interference in our daily lives as for NOW! Still its good at least the government has realized the potential.
